At the culmination of a two month shoestring trip throughout South America, I’m sat in the departure lounge at Rio’s Galeano international airport reminiscing at the sights and experiences taken in over the past eight weeks. Along with the usual sightseeing highlights of Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, Cristo Redentor, Maracana, Patagonia, the Andes and Iguacu falls, the good people of this continent spring to mind, their unquenchable spirit made all the more remarkable considering the centuries of social and political turmoil they’ve been subjected to. The house standing in front of me was in shambles. Shingles were peeling off the roof, the windows were cracked, bricks were crumbling, and if you stood far enough away it looked like it was leaning to the left ever so slightly, as if trying to gain leverage on a massive toilet seat in order to pinch out a reluctant loaf.
